Mar del Plata will install an innovative device that transforms wave motion into energy

The Province of Buenos Aires is advancing in a pioneering project of wave energy at the Port of Mar del Plata. The device, designed to transform wave motion into energy, is the result of joint work between the UTN Regional Pacheco and the company Elektrogen, with funding from the Buenos Aires Technological Innovation Fund (FITBA) and support from PROINGED.

Recently, the technical team from UTN successfully conducted a “dry test” at the Duroll metallurgical plant in Pilar. This phase is crucial before the final installation on the Mar del Plata coast, which will mark a milestone in the implementation of renewable energies in the region.

Wave Energy: Strategic Advantages

Wave energy is emerging as one of the most promising sources for the energy transition:

  • High energy density: water is 800 times denser than air, allowing more electricity to be generated in less space than wind energy.
  • Predictable and constant: unlike the sun or wind, wave motion is more stable and facilitates integration into the power grid.
  • Low visual impact: most devices are underwater or float at sea level, reducing the landscape impact.
  • Proximity to consumption: a large part of the population lives near the coasts, reducing electricity transmission losses.
  • Pure sustainability: it is an inexhaustible source, with no greenhouse gas emissions.

Additional Benefits

In addition to generating electricity, this technology can be applied in:

  • Water desalination, offering solutions to regions with water scarcity.
  • Green hydrogen production, key to boosting the blue economy and diversifying the energy matrix.

Local Development and Energy Sovereignty

The Subsecretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Province (CienciaPBA) highlighted that the project not only drives technological innovation but also promotes productive development with Buenos Aires labor and knowledge.

The installation in Mar del Plata represents a step towards energy sovereignty and the consolidation of the province as a leader in clean energies.

The commitment to wave energy in Mar del Plata symbolizes a strategic advance in Argentina’s energy transition. With a device capable of transforming sea motion into electricity, the province positions itself at the forefront of renewable energies, combining innovation, sustainability, and local development.
