Thermal batteries: solution for heat storage in the industry

Electrified Thermal Solutions, co-founded in 2021 by Daniel Stack, a former student of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), seeks to offer a clean alternative for industrial sectors. Stack has been working for a decade on the concept of “thermal battery”, a device that stores heat instead of electricity.

The thermal batteries designed by his team use electricity to heat a conductive version of electricity in the refractory ceramic bricks.

These bricks can efficiently store heat for hours and release it by heating air or other gases to temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees Celsius, enough to meet the needs of many industrial processes.

Impact and Future of Thermal Batteries

Achieving 1,800 degrees Celsius through this method represents an opportunity for the transition to clean and renewable energies in industrial sectors that rely on high temperatures.

Stack and his team managed to create conductive refractory bricks by modifying the chemical composition of traditional bricks. Electrified Thermal’s bricks are 98% similar to existing ones, allowing manufacturers to produce them at no additional cost.

This innovative approach enables the new refractory bricks to reach such high temperatures, something that would not be achieved simply by incorporating electric resistances into regular bricks.
