Climate risks threaten major cities by 2050

Most read

According to the latest report from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), half of the world’s largest cities will be at risk of experiencing one or more climate risks by 2050, such as floods, heatwaves, cyclones, and water scarcity, unless greenhouse gas emissions are controlled.

Emission Reduction Level

The “Atlas Net Zero” report from LSEG sets out the emission reduction targets that countries must establish to avoid climate catastrophes, before the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

With current policies, it is predicted that global warming will reach 2.6°C, significantly increasing the climate risk in cities.

Impact on European Cities

European cities like Amsterdam and Madrid are at higher risk. Amsterdam faces a high risk of sea level rise and floods, while Madrid will see an increase in heatwave days and water stress.

London and Manchester are also at risk, with projected increases in water scarcity and heatwaves.

Adaptation and Resilience

LSEG suggests adaptation strategies that cities can implement, from early warning systems and fortifications to nature-based solutions, such as green infrastructure and drainage systems.

These efforts are crucial to enable cities to thrive in the face of new climate extremes.
