Córdoba is the most deforested province and they are calling for a modification of the native forest law to allow more livestock farming.

Córdoba is the most deforested province, and rural entities in the Northwest Arc insist on their claim for a debate on the territorial planning of the native forest to modify protected areas and expand the cattle frontier.

This proposal has been rejected by researchers from Conicet and the National University of Córdoba.

Criticisms of the Provincial Ministry of Environment

Rural entities criticize the Provincial Ministry of Environment for “exclusion, silence, and cowardice” in their actions. They claim that they have not been given a permanent and valid space in discussions on the topic, and that the lack of response and presence in meetings demonstrates ignorance and insecurity on the part of the officials.

Study of Burned Areas in the Northwest Arc

The Cordoba Mesa de Enlace funded the “Study of Burned Areas in the Northwest Arc,” presented in August, which covers 7 million hectares in the northwest of Córdoba.

In 12 years, 1.1 million hectares were burned, with 75% of the fires occurring in areas categorized as forests of high or medium conservation value, making the province the most deforested. Rural entities argue that the current Territorial Planning Map does not reflect reality and generates serious consequences.

Support for Rural Producers

Rural entities emphasize that the majority of those affected by the fires are small rural producers and subsistence farmers who cannot do anything due to regulations.

Gustavo Laudin, president of the Rural Society of Cruz del Eje, states that producers live in uncertainty and are pursued by a control body that clings to a legal instrument unknown to the landowners.

Claims and Proposals

The entities demand an immediate report from the Provincial Ministry of Environment and the creation of a real territorial planning map that is consistent with the lives of the inhabitants and the community.

They believe that sustainable land management is the solution to reduce the fuel load that feeds the fires.
