The Swiss glaciers are facing an unprecedented climate crisis, with the total loss of their winter reserves two months earlier than expected. This phenomenon, resulting from intense heat waves in Europe, threatens the stability of these mountainous ecosystems.
Melting of Swiss Glaciers: An Alarming Phenomenon
According to the Glacier Monitoring Network in Switzerland, snow reserves, which normally protect glacial ice until August, were depleted at the beginning of summer. This occurs amid an extreme heat that has hit the continent in recent months.
The glaciologist Matthias Huss warned about the three-month advance in melting, exposing the ancient ice during the hottest stage of the year. This imbalance puts the region’s water supply at risk and accelerates glacial retreat.
The Swiss Academy of Science highlighted that this critical mismatch exposes the central body of the glaciers, intensifying melting and threatening local water resources.
Glacier loss day, a term that defines the moment when winter snow completely evaporates, has arrived prematurely. From this day on, solar rays directly impact the dark ice, increasing its heat absorption and accelerating melting.
Historically, snow protected glacial ice until August; however, drier winters and extreme heat waves have broken this dynamic. Snowfall has decreased by between 13% and 25% compared to previous decades.
Additionally, temperatures above 40 °C have raised the zero-degree isotherm in the Swiss Alps, causing rapid and unprecedented melting.
In the last ten years, Swiss glaciers have lost a quarter of their total volume, and more than 1,000 small glaciers have disappeared. The Swiss Academy of Science warns that if warming continues, only remnants of ice will remain by the end of the century.
In iconic glaciers such as the Rhône, Aletsch, and Claridenfirn, decreases of up to one meter in thickness have been recorded in just ten days, demonstrating the severity of the phenomenon.
