The German company **Bayer** is facing an unprecedented trial in France for the [effects of glyphosate](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/glifosato-cero-las-advertencias-cientificas-sobre-sus-riesgos/). On Monday, they will appear before a court due to the alleged link between the [exposure to the chemical](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/brasil-registro-record-de-agrotoxicos-en-2024/) of a young man when his mother was pregnant.

The boy now suffers from serious malformations, which, they accuse, were caused by the [contact with the **pesticide**](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/brasil-registro-record-de-agrotoxicos-en-2024/).

The civil trial could set a precedent in the country. Therefore, other potential victims of the world’s most used herbicide could bring their cases to justice “more quickly.”

## Bayer faces an unprecedented trial in France
The events date back to 2006 when **Sabine Grataloup**, who was pregnant at the time, used glyphosate to weed a riding track. She stated that she sprayed the substance “several times a day, without any special protection.”

At that time, she was unaware that she was pregnant for “several weeks.”

In **2018, both parents sued** the company **Monsanto**, which **Bayer had just acquired**.

This American company provided the glyphosate molecule to the Glyper brand, the herbicide used by the 54-year-old Grataloup. Glyper is “a resale product of Roundup,” the well-known Monsanto brand, and the packaging did not warn about the risk of malformation.

This is how the woman detailed it, stating that the company downplayed its toxicity to global regulatory authorities.

## The consequences on the young man’s health
Théo, Grataloup’s son, was born in May 2007 with a **malformation of the esophagus and trachea**. Since then, the young man has undergone 55 surgical interventions to be able to feed normally.

However, he continues to breathe and speak through an opening in his throat.

The family will request a legal evaluation within a process of **claiming responsibility**, with the ultimate goal of seeking compensation for damages if the causal relationship between glyphosate and the **teenager’s disability** is confirmed.

The French Fund for Compensation for Pesticide Victims recognized in 2022 the link between the herbicide and the young man’s condition, who has been receiving **€1,000 per month** in compensation since then.
