High levels of ‘forever chemicals’ detected in smartwatch straps

Most read

A study by the **American Chemical Society**, published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters from ACS, reveals that **smartwatch bands** and fitness trackers can expose the skin to **”forever chemicals”**.

The more expensive bands made of **fluorinated synthetic rubber** contain high concentrations of **perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA)**, a type of permanent chemical.

## “Forever chemicals” in smartwatch bands
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (**PFAS**) are known for their durability and ability to **repel water, sweat, and grease**. These properties make them ideal for consumer products such as stain-resistant bedding, menstrual products, sportswear, and smartwatch bands and fitness trackers.

The bands contain fluoroelastomers, **synthetic rubbers** made from PFAS chains, which prevent discoloration and repel dirt.

## Research and potential health effects
Graham Peaslee, a researcher at the **University of Notre Dame**, and his team examined 22 bands from different brands and prices. They found that the bands containing fluoroelastomers had **high concentrations of PFHxA**, with an average concentration of nearly 800 parts per billion (ppb).

One sample exceeded 16,000 ppb. The researchers suggest that PFHxA is used as a surfactant during the **manufacturing of fluoroelastomers**.

Although it is not fully understood how PFHxA transfers to the skin and **its potential health effects**, recent studies indicate that a significant percentage could penetrate human skin under normal conditions.

Alyssa Wicks, Heather Whitehead, and Graham Peaslee recommend purchasing lower-cost **silicone bands**. If opting for a more expensive band, they suggest reading the product descriptions and avoiding those containing fluoroelastomers.
