On the early morning of Monday, May 26, 2025, a historic snowfall began in Córdoba. A cold front coming from the south caused the first white blanket of the year for the province.
It covered emblematic landscapes such as the Altas Cumbres, Cerro Champaquí, and La Cumbrecita.
The phenomenon surprised both residents and tourists, who captured images of the unusual white blanket that covered the region.
Historic Snowfall in Córdoba: What Caused the Phenomenon
The snowfall began around 3 in the morning and quickly spread through the mountainous areas. By 7 a.m., localities like Pampa de Achala, Los Gigantes, and Cerro Champaquí were already covered in snow.
La Cumbrecita, with temperatures of 2.1°C, also presented a winter scene, while the Parador El Cóndor in Champaquí recorded the lowest temperature: -1.7°C.

According to meteorologist Gerardo Barrera, the snowfall was due to a combination of a mass of cold air at high altitudes and a high humidity content in the atmosphere, exceeding 97%.
This cold air current, with a diameter of 400 km, passed over Córdoba, abruptly cooling the vapor in the clouds and turning it into snowflakes. This phenomenon is uncommon in the region, as snowfalls usually occur in higher altitude areas.
The Camino de las Altas Cumbres was one of the most affected areas by the snowfall. The accumulation of snow and the presence of black ice, a thin transparent layer of ice on the asphalt, forced authorities to close the section for more than two hours.
The Highway Patrol implemented the Winter Operation, applying salt on the road to minimize risks. Traffic was restored around noon, although it was recommended to exercise extreme caution due to slippery conditions.
Weather Forecast
Cold conditions are expected to persist throughout the week. For Wednesday, May 28, widespread frosts are anticipated, with minimum temperatures below zero and maximum temperatures not exceeding 14°C.
On Thursday, May 29, the temperature could drop to -2°C, although a slight recovery is expected towards Friday.
