A capybara was rescued thanks to the intervention of the Specialized Fiscal Unit in Environmental Matters (UFEMA), led by Carlos Rolero Santurián, who was alerted to the situation through posts on social media, managing to rescue a capybara that was lost in the vicinity of 3 de Febrero and Comodoro Rivadavia streets.

UFEMA immediately ordered the intervention of the Environmental Crimes Division of the City Police, whose officers, after conducting fieldwork and surveys in the areas mentioned by neighbors, managed to find the specimen of the wildlife (“hydrochoerus hydrochaeris”).

The police personnel located the animal under a vehicle on Comodoro Rivadavia street at 1800 and later inside a mechanic workshop. Finally, the capybara, a very young and visibly frightened specimen, was rescued.

After the rescue, the capybara was taken to Ecoparque Porteño for evaluation and the preparation of reports prior to its release into its natural habitat.

“In the last four months, this is the second specimen of these characteristics that we have rescued. This leads us to believe, according to our investigative theory, that these animals are captured to be illegally kept in private homes, in what is commonly known as ‘pet-keeping,’” stated the head of UFEMA, Carlos Rolero Santurián.

An investigation for acts of cruelty (Law No. 14,346) and for violation of the Wildlife Conservation Law (Law No. 22,421) has been initiated, and investigative measures have been ordered to the police officers at the rescue site.

It is important to note that the rescued capybara is part of the wildlife, and its removal from its natural habitat constitutes an act of animal cruelty as stipulated in National Law 14,346.
