An environmental sanitation operation carried out in the early hours of Saturday in Dina Huapi, Río Negro, allowed the detection of a case of illegal fishing, when two individuals were intercepted transporting 36 illegally obtained trouts.

The procedure took place during a routine vehicle check, where police officers stopped a car with two occupants. When questioned, the driver claimed they had been fishing and were carrying only four specimens. However, the response raised suspicions among the officers, who requested to inspect the trunk of the vehicle.

During the inspection, the officers discovered more than 30 trouts hidden in garbage bags, concealed under the spare tire. Additionally, they found backpacks with fishing gear, including the traditional “cans,” and over two kilograms of bait made from flour and other products.

Faced with evidence of the infraction, the officers proceeded to seize the trouts and the materials used, in addition to issuing the corresponding fine to those involved. Illegal fishing represents a threat to the ecosystem and is subject to strict regulations for control. Authorities reiterated the call to respect current regulations and warned about the sanctions faced by those who engage in illegal fishing, with the aim of preserving the fish fauna of the region.

Trouts illegally caught: what is illegal fishing like in the country?

Illegal fishing is considered an activity that does not comply with established norms, is undeclared, or takes place in an unregulated fishery.

Among its consequences are the threat to marine biodiversity, as well as endangering global food security, affecting sustainable development, harming coastal communities, and reducing legal fishing incomes.

Argentina and illegal fishing

In Argentina, illegal fishing is a problem due to the presence of foreign fleets entering without authorization.

The Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA) patrols Argentine waters to control illegal fishing. In fact, the PNA captured fishing vessels operating illegally in the EEZ waters.

Among the measures to combat illegal fishing are maritime surveillance, international cooperation, satellite monitoring technology, and the Coast Guard system.
