The province of Neuquén celebrates a historic agreement that seeks to become a model of management for the rest of Patagonia. It is an agreement that aims at the conservation of the rivers in Neuquén, establishing a comprehensive management for the preservation of natural resources, as well as promoting tourism development in the region.

This agreement was signed by the Government of the Province of Neuquén, led by Minister Gustavo Fernandez Capiet, the Chamber of Fishing Guides and Professionals, the Patagonian Lands Foundation, and the riparian owners for the care of the Collón Curá, Aluminé, Chimehuín, and Caleufú rivers. These sections are considered strategic points for sport fishing.

In this sense, the minister emphasized the importance of this agreement and ensured that this signing will become a milestone for the protection of the province’s natural resources, seeking to achieve a balance in environmental conservation with the recreational and touristic use of the rivers.

According to the agreement, the parties involved must create a Permanent Working Group, composed of representatives from all signing parties. This group will have to meet twice a year to coordinate management actions and evaluate the impact of the implemented policies, integrating local knowledge with scientific studies to achieve sustainable and adaptive management.

What does the historic agreement to care for the rivers consist of?

The agreement signed in Neuquén for the conservation and care of the rivers establishes the regulation of camping areas, delimitation of critical areas, and river access. The aim is to ensure proper waste management and reduce environmental impact, with the objective of avoiding water pollution. For this reason, the Patagonian Lands Foundation and the Center for Applied Ecology of Neuquén (CEAN) will work together to carry out constant monitoring to assess the state of fish resources and water quality.

Provisions such as mandatory training in fire management for fishing guides and campsites were also included, to be provided once a year with a certification exam as a requirement, aiming to improve safety. This point includes the active participation of authorized fishing guides, who will be responsible for ensuring responsible use of resources.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Tourism of the province stated that it will be in charge of supervising compliance with the agreement in accordance with Law 2536 and its regulatory decree. This law provides for sanctions for those who do not comply with the established regulations, ensuring environmental protection.
