New phase of “Alerta Patagonia”, the campaign to prevent forest fires

Heading into the summer season, a new stage of the “Alerta Patagonia” campaign kicks off. This is an action to prevent forest fires in the most vulnerable areas due to the conditions.

Between October and March, high temperatures, along with the dryness of the vegetation, increase the possibilities of fires in the Patagonian region.

Alerta Patagonia: keys to prevention

More than 90% of these events occur due to human causes: poorly extinguished campfires, cigarette butts, glass or metal waste can be the start of a fire that endangers forests, animals, and entire communities.

Between 2022 and 2023, more than 14,000 hectares of native forests in Patagonia have been lost. Added to this are the effects of climate change: less rainfall, longer droughts, more frequent thunderstorms in the mountains, excessive accumulation of flammable vegetation, and a significant increase in the region’s population.

During this period, early warning is essential. That’s why Friends of Patagonia launches, alongside influencers, celebrities, local organizations, and other allies, a new edition of #AlertaPatagonia, their prevention and awareness campaign.

Under the motto “One less spark, one less fire,” the NGO invites Argentine society to raise awareness and disseminate useful information, such as prevention measures and emergency numbers, available on their website aapatagonia.org.ar/alerta.

Recommendations

Alerta Patagonia

  • In case of detecting smoke, fire, a poorly extinguished campfire, or any suspicious situation, immediately call firefighters (100), emergency services (911), or local authorities.
  • It is essential to provide clear information about the location and magnitude of the incident.
