More than 150 animals rescued from abuse and illegal trade at the Pompeya Fair
After a comprehensive inspection ordered by the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office (UFEMA), 92 birds, 16 dogs, 6 cats, 53 rabbits, 26 hamsters, 12 mice, and 3 squirrels were rescued. Several people were charged.
The case arose from a complaint made by various NGOs and neighbors of the neighborhood. The operation at the Pompeya Fair, coordinated by the Judicial Investigations Corps of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the City and carried out jointly with the City Police and control agencies of the GCBA, focused on monitoring the operation of the stands within the so-called “Pompeya Bird Fair“, located at Avda. Saenz 790.
In the premises, dogs and cats were offered for sale, caged in small spaces and exposed to high temperatures without the necessary care. Additionally, at five stands other non-domestic animal species were offered for sale, whose sale is prohibited due to the high potential for danger from the transmission of zoonotic diseases.
Also, a stand that offered untraceable and unauthorized animal drugs from SENASA and/or ANMAT was closed. The rescued birds were transferred to the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, under the authority of the Porteño Ecopark, for study and relocation. The rest of the animals were placed in the custody of various protective NGOs, some of which had filed the complaint.

Prosecutor Carlos Rolero Santurián, in charge of UFEMA, charged 10 people from the Pompeya Fair for improper use of public space and illegal practice of an activity, and 6 people for acts of animal abuse and cruelty, according to Law 14346. The operation involved the participation of the General Directorate of Environmental Control, the General Directorate of Public Space Planning, and the Animal Health Coordination Unit of the Environmental Protection Agency.
