The United States’ exit from the Paris Agreement has already been confirmed. However, it is not an instantaneous process or something that will happen overnight.

The administration of Donald Trump officially notified the Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, of its decision regarding the international treaty against climate change on Tuesday.

In this regard, it will take effect on January 27th, 2026, as detailed by their spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, during their daily press briefing.

The United States had already withdrawn from the agreement during Trump’s first presidency (2017-2021), although the withdrawal took place much later into his term, in November 2020, and under the Administration of Joe Biden, it quickly rejoined in 2021.

Just like on that occasion, the billionaire Michael Bloomberg announced that he will finance the U.S.’s climate commitments through his foundation after the withdrawal.

According to the still valid climate agreements, the country had a climate adaptation funding target of $300 billion by 2035, agreed upon at the COP29 climate summit in Baku in November of last year.

Trump’s Administration: Climate Implications

Trump’s intention is to expedite the granting of permits and review regulations that “impose undue burdens on the production and use of energy, including mining and non-combustible mineral processing,” according to a list of priorities from Trump’s press office.

He also intends to take measures to end the leasing of land and water for wind energy, and undo Biden’s Government actions promoting electric vehicles.

Trump believes that energy prices are crucial to addressing widespread frustration over the cost of living. He argued that reducing bureaucracy will help lower energy prices and combat overall inflation.

“The inflation crisis was caused by excessive spending and rising energy prices,” Trump said during his inauguration speech. “That is why today, I will also declare a national energy emergency. We will drill, baby, drill,” he added.
