Denmark creates the world’s first eco-friendly ammonia plant.

Recently, a Danish alliance formed by Topsoe, Skovgaard Energy, and Vestas inaugurated the world’s first dynamic ecological ammonia plant in Ramme, Denmark. Nel, a company specialized in electrolysis technologies, provided the electrolyzers for this pioneering project.

Hydrogen Production with Renewable Energy

In this project, Nel supplied a 10 MW electrolysis capacity through four A485 units, producing hydrogen from renewable energy. This hydrogen is then synthesized into ecological ammonia.

The plant, connected to solar and wind energy sources, adjusts to the fluctuations of these sources, eliminating the need for battery or hydrogen storage and reducing production costs of green ammonia.

The plant can prevent the emission of 8,200 tons of CO₂ per year by producing over 5,000 tons of green ammonia. This achievement demonstrates the potential of green ammonia to decarbonize sectors such as maritime transport, agriculture, steelmaking, and industrial ammonia production.

Advances towards a Renewable Hydrogen Economy

The Ramme project also provides insights for the development of Power-to-X projects, which convert renewable electricity into other energy carriers such as hydrogen or synthetic fuels. The experience gained in this plant can serve as a foundation for future more ambitious projects.

The collaboration between Topsoe, Skovgaard Energy, and Vestas has created a replicable model for similar projects worldwide. These synergies are essential to accelerate the global energy transition.

Towards a Sustainable Future

The dynamic green ammonia plant in Ramme represents a milestone in the transition towards a more sustainable and efficient energy system. The combination of renewable energies, technological innovation, and strategic collaboration paves the way for a future with lower carbon emissions.
