The Buenos Aires town of Ezeiza inaugurated a unique green space on Wednesday: the first municipal nursery in its history. They included vegetable and ornamental plants, trees, and native species.
They are a great source of food and shelter for the local fauna, especially birds and butterflies. In addition, they offer better resistance to “pests” than many exotic species.
On the other hand, they also installed a seed bank and an “educational” dome, where talks and workshops will be held.
Ezeiza’s municipal nursery
“We inaugurated a new plaza designed in a participatory and community way with the neighbors of the La Esperanza neighborhood,” said the Secretary of Environment and Community Construction of the municipality, Guatavo Boccaccio.
“It is a space that will have the wonderful task of producing and managing 30,000 plants per year. Among ornamental plants, vegetable seedlings, and mostly native plants, which provide enormous benefits to our environment and our natural quality,” he emphasized.
Inauguration of Ezeiza’s municipal nursery. The nursery also has an environmental park composed of multiple spaces for the valorization of the environment: a seed bank to conserve genetic resources, a green classroom, the educational dome.
It also includes a bio-factory warehouse, where plants will be produced from seeds, greenhouses, vegetable gardens, pond, mill. “All educational, recreational, and productive spaces to work on environmental awareness,” Boccaccio stated.
Municipal nursery: green and community employment
During the same inauguration, held on Wednesday, the authorities detailed that what is produced in the nursery will also create jobs. “We are forming a cooperative to sell part of the plant production and improve the workers’ income,” the official said.
In this regard, he called on companies and industries and “the entire private sector” to offset their carbon footprint through contributions or compensations in tree units.
Reforestation plan
Ezeiza’s municipal nursery.During the inauguration of the municipal nursery, the creation of the public tree reforestation plan was also presented. It is called “Ezeiza Urban Forest,” which is directly related to the nursery.
In this line, they will differentiate three vegetation situations in the Ezeiza territory:
- Green area with a large presence of trees or plants
- Yellow area with a presence of plants that require intervention
- Red area of urban expansion spaces that require reforestation
“We believe in one form of development, sustainable development, which is why we promote local industry development to generate quality employment,” emphasized Boccaccio.
“We work on infrastructure development to reduce the inequality gap and also promote care and respect for the natural environment,” he concluded.
