The **Government of Chubut** has inaugurated the **”Lemu” Forest Nursery** in the town of El Maitén. This project aims at the **production of native species** destined for the restoration of **forests affected by fires**, a recurring problem in the region.
The initiative is a milestone as it is the first **provincial nursery** focused exclusively on the recovery of **degraded areas**.
The inaugural event took place last Tuesday at a facility located on the side of Route 70, on the way to Buenos Aires Chico.
The ceremony was attended by authorities from the **Forestry Secretariat**, representatives of the **Provincial Fire Management Service**, and technical staff, highlighting the importance of this environmental policy in the mountainous region.
## A commitment to the production and restoration of native species
The new nursery has a **production capacity of 70,000 native seedlings**.
These seedlings will be used in reforestation projects aimed at recovering areas devastated by fires. The goal is to strengthen the **native forest area** and mitigate the effects of fire disasters. The nursery will be a key element in consolidating the **network of state and private nurseries**. It will increase the response capacity to events of this nature.
The project not only encompasses production but also serves as a tool for **awareness and environmental education**.
The nursery will also facilitate the organization of participatory planting days. The aim is to promote **forest ecosystem care** among local communities and strengthen the relationship between government institutions and civil society.
## Financing and strategic collaboration
The construction of the **”Lemu” Forest Nursery** was made possible thanks to the funding provided by the **National Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development**, through the **ProCLIM-AR Project**, and in collaboration with the **Wildlife Foundation Argentina**. This strategic alliance allows not only the establishment of the nursery but also the guaranteed production of at least **30,000 additional seedlings** over the next two years.
The project’s long-term purpose is not only to mitigate the consequences of fires but also to promote the resilience of forest ecosystems in the **mountainous region**.
