The future of environmental journalism in Argentina depends on a profound transformation: it is imperative to integrate the ecological agenda into the daily life of newsrooms, in political decision-making, and in the awareness of civil society.
The barriers of the sector
Currently, this specialty suffers from a low coverage due to editors perceiving these topics as uncommercial or lacking media appeal. There is a marked preference for covering environmental disasters involving public figures or luxury tourist destinations, while critical local issues —such as the decontamination of basins in Buenos Aires— are ignored if they do not present a sensational component.
Furthermore, the impact of environmental journalism is limited by:
- Lack of specialization: Generalist reporters lack the tools to interpret technical reports or evaluate public policies.
- Social context: Environmental education is still deficient, despite the existence of a legal framework (National Law 27.621).
- Hostile environment: Many journalists investigating environmental complaints face high levels of threats.
Towards a new professional profile
To reverse this situation, it is essential for the communicator to be comprehensively prepared:
- Technical training: Solid knowledge in biology, geography, and socio-environmental issues.
- Translation ability: Skill to convert complex data into accessible information for the general public.
- Ethical commitment: Rigor in the use of sources and the ability to connect social conflicts with environmental damage.
- Mediation: Act as an effective bridge between the State, companies, environmental organizations, and the audience.
A historical imperative
Journalism cannot be limited to informing; it must be the engine of a change in attitude. Our generation possesses all the necessary information to understand the ecological crisis —from global warming and the loss of biodiversity to systemic pollution—.
Failing to act with the necessary force to save the Earth will be the judgment of future generations. The big question is whether we will be willing to sacrifice our current comfort to ensure their future. The commitment to specialized journalism and the value of local knowledge are the most effective tools to build narratives that allow us to change course in time.
