The planet is on its way to being emptied of people. A recent study predicts that deaths will surpass births in more and more countries, leading to a gradual decrease in the world population.
While the 20th century witnessed the most significant demographic explosion in human history, the situation could change drastically, according to forecasts. This is if current trends continue.
## Is the planet on its way to being emptied?
In the mentioned past century, the world population increased from about 1.65 billion in 1900 to over 6 billion by the year 2000. By the end of 2022, we have already surpassed the threshold of 8 billion.

However, things are about to start changing. According to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, recently published in *The Lancet*, a significant demographic shift is expected: the decline of the world population.
It is foreseen that by 2050, a vast majority of nations (155 out of 204) will experience fertility rates insufficient to sustain their current populations.
The phenomenon will intensify towards 2100, by which time almost all, 97% of countries (198 out of 204), will face the same reality. The direct consequence will be that the number of deaths will exceed births, leading to a gradual decrease in the global population.
## How would it affect the environment?
Although a smaller population could result in a reduction of pressure on natural resources, it is also crucial to consider how the distribution can impact the management of these resources and biodiversity.
The geopolitical landscape will also be affected, as power dynamics can change significantly with variations in the size and structure of country populations.
This could reshape alliances, zones of influence, and priorities in international politics.
## The consequences of this drastic change

According to estimates, the real issue of this future lies in our planet’s ability to provide the resources necessary to guarantee the survival and well-being of the global population.
While this may seem like good news, as it includes vital aspects such as access to clean water, nutritious food, sustainable energy, among others, there would also be issues.
For example, it could result in inverted population pyramids, increasing pressure on health and social systems, transforming labor and consumption markets, and altering resource usage patterns.
Likewise, healthcare systems must adapt to an aging population. This will imply increased demands for long-term care and a rise in age-related diseases.
## How to prepare
In this sense, it is essential to start strategic planning that considers potential threats to the economy.
A declining population can translate into a reduced workforce, affecting productivity and economic growth.
