Verdín in Entre Ríos: What’s Happening in the Uruguay River

Most read

A few weeks ago, “green algae” appeared in Entre Ríos. In reality, it is cyanobacteria that can be seen on the shores of the Uruguay River.

In response, the municipality announced on Sunday that it is possible to enjoy the beaches of Concepción del Uruguay normally, although caution is advised at Banco Pelay.

At this beach, a black and yellow flag has been placed to indicate caution. What does this mean and what should bathers do?

Green algae in Entre Ríos: What causes it

Green algae appear when microscopic algae in the aquatic system experience accelerated growth. This causes them to accumulate in calm water areas and become very visible, coloring the water a intense green color.

The growth of these algae is related to increased levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients in the aquatic ecosystem.

This can be due to various factors, such as the untreated discharge of industrial, domestic, agricultural, and livestock wastewater, or soil erosion that carries particles into the water.

Climate change, which causes an increase in water temperature, and the effects of dams on river flow, which can reduce water velocity or cause stagnation, also promote the growth of cyanobacteria.

Could it be toxic?

According to the Administrative Commission of the Uruguay River (CARU), more than 50% of cyanobacteria blooms are toxic. They can be harmful to both animals and humans, affecting the skin, mucous membranes, nervous, digestive, and renal systems.

Therefore, it is important to note that symptoms can appear if there has been contact with these bacteria in the water. These include:

  • Headache
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Nausea and dizziness
  • Irritation of the skin and eyes
  • Inflammation in ears, nose, and throat
  • Dry cough
  • Pneumonia
  • Severe liver damage

It is recommended to follow the water quality signs at the beaches and avoid entering the water.
