The **Córdoba Municipality** has started the cleaning and weeding tasks in a **landfill** in the La Toma neighborhood, with the aim of [transforming it into a new green space](https://noticiasambientales.com/compromiso-ambiental/transforman-en-lomas-de-zamora-antiguos-basurales-en-nuevos-espacios-verdes-para-los-vecinos/).
This proposal, driven by the neighborhood community center, was the winner of the Environmental Contest for Neighborhood Centers.
A project to improve the quality of life of residents
The project is part of the municipal program that seeks to **transform open-air landfills** and unused land into squares. This new green space will benefit not only the **residents of La Toma**, but also those from neighboring neighborhoods such as Industrial and Ampliación Los Robles.
The intervention is being carried out by the company Lusa, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Circular Economy. Cleaning tasks, **soil conditioning**, and preparation for the next stages have already been done in the area.
Equipment and design of the new green space
The space will feature playgrounds, trails, tables, benches, **separate waste bins**, **landscaping**, and LED lighting.
A similar intervention has already been completed in Villa Retiro of Horizonte II, where residents enjoy the neighborhood’s first square.
The problem of open-air landfills
Open-air landfills imply [an increasingly serious environmental and public health problem](https://noticiasambientales.com/residuos/capilla-del-monte-crisis-sanitaria-y-ambiental-por-el-basural-a-cielo-abierto/) in Argentina and a challenge that many administrations promise to solve but which, in most cases, ends up being neglected.
By 2017, the “State of the Environment Report,” prepared by the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development of Argentina, indicated that **there were more than 5000 open-air landfills** throughout the territory, which means, on average, more than two landfills per municipality, covering a total of 8600 hectares.
The situation in the country is alarming and the **implementation of policies** is urgently needed to put a stop to the spread of these dumps and eradicate the existing ones.
