During 2024, Veolia reaffirmed its environmental commitment in the province of **Misiones** through sustainable waste management by its subsidiary Aesa Misiones.
The company receives, collects, transports, and operates in two landfills, handling household, hazardous, and pathogenic waste.
## Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction
Veolia operates the landfills in Misiones: one in Fachinal (south) and another in Caraguatay (north). Both received an average of 11,000 and 5,700 tons of waste per month respectively, totaling 205,000 tons annually.
In Fachinal, the biogas burning was increased by 60%, reducing methane emissions. In Caraguatay, 24 biogas capture wells were installed. In addition, biodiversity enhancement actions were carried out in Fachinal, including the planting of native trees and bird care.
## Sustainable Waste Management in Posadas
In Posadas, Veolia collects solid urban waste through 8 collection routes, serving more than 80,000 people and collecting about 1,300 tons per month, representing 16% of the city’s MSW.
The company also implemented improvements in the 26 Transfer Stations in the province, streamlining processes and optimizing infrastructure.
## Treatment of Bulky and Pathological Waste
Since August, Veolia, in collaboration with the Municipality of Posadas and Iprodha, has removed and transported over 2,000 tons of bulky waste.
Regarding pathological waste, Veolia processes 117 tons per month from hospitals and municipalities at its treatment plant in Fachinal, using an autoclave to sterilize the waste.
## Safe Disposal of Batteries
Misiones is one of the few provinces with a secure system for the final disposal of used household batteries.
Veolia has disposed of 20,000 kilos of these batteries and plans to dispose of another 20,000 kilos already processed. In addition, the company conducted awareness campaigns reaching 19 municipalities.
## Master Plan 2026-2036: Towards a Sustainable Future
Veolia presented the Master Plan 2026-2036, focusing on transforming the Fachinal landfill into an Environmental Technological Park.
The project includes the installation of a dual thermodegradation and autoclave plant, composting areas, and technologies for energy generation through biogas and photovoltaic panels.
