The Ministry of Environment and Circular Economy, led by Victoria Flores, participated in a reforestation of more than 2,000 tabaquillo trees in Pampa de Achala. This action aims to contribute to the ecological restoration of the Sierras Grandes de Córdoba.
The initiative was articulated together with the Civil Association Acción Ambiental, with the support of IVECO Group, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (UNC), and groups from the Tabaquillo de Córdoba Table. These groups are dedicated to restoring the sources of water basins in the Sierras Grandes through the planting of Polylepis australis, known as tabaquillo.
Importance of Tabaquillo in reforestation
The Tabaquillo Table, implemented by the Subsecretariat of Biodiversity under the direction of Miguel Magnasco, aims to create a space for dialogue and strengthening of restoration projects of high-altitude forests. The Government of Córdoba continues to build alliances to enhance the work of these groups.
The tabaquillo is an endemic tree of Argentina, important for the province’s biodiversity, as it can thrive above 1,800 meters above sea level. It is fire-resistant and has the ability to sprout back after fires, acting as a natural guardian of high-altitude ecosystems.
Pampa de Achala Provincial Water Reserve
The reforestation in the Pampa de Achala Provincial Water Reserve contributes to preserving unique species in the region, such as the achaleño red fox, the puma, the Achala toad and the Andean condor.
By restoring these ecosystems, not only is the environment protected, but also the supply of drinking water is ensured.
