Trasa measures and offsets its carbon footprint with sustainable projects.

The company Trasa, certified as a B Corp and committed to financial inclusion, measured its carbon footprint for the period 2023-2024 and offset it along with the previous cycle’s footprint through credits in environmental projects. These initiatives are focused on wind energy generation in Chubut and conservation of biodiversity in the Amazon.

During the 2022 period, Trasa’s emissions were equivalent to 86.7 tons of CO2, a figure that rose to 140.89 tons in 2023. This increase is due to the incorporation of new analysis variables in the measurement, carried out under the GHG protocol standards, which establish guidelines for managing greenhouse gas emissions.

The protocol distinguishes three types of emissions: Scope 1 (direct) for fossil fuel combustion and own vehicle emissions, Scope 2 (indirect) for purchased electricity consumption, and Scope 3 (other indirect) for emissions from business trips, waste disposal, and production of acquired materials.

Trasa managed to reduce mobile combustion emissions in Scope 1 by 48.09%. In Scope 2, emissions increased by 100.41% due to the company’s expansion with new offices and warehouses. However, in Scope 3, reductions were achieved in landfill logistics (1.28%), worker trips (2.71%), and Andreani logistics (28.57%), although business trips by plane increased by 127.48%.

Compensation Strategies

To mitigate its environmental impact, Trasa implemented measures such as training for employees and reduction of energy expenses. Additionally, they developed projects such as the sale of virtual cards, which prevented the emission of 2.54 tons of CO2 in 2022 and 2.18 tons in 2023.

For the first time, the company offset its emissions by purchasing carbon credits, reaching a total of 227.59 tons of CO2 equivalents. The selected projects include Winds Projects Argentina, with six wind parks generating clean energy, and Castañeros REDD+, aimed at protecting the Amazon and conserving its biodiversity, benefiting 405 local families.

Beyond reducing its environmental impact, Trasa reaffirms its commitment to social inclusion. In low-income neighborhoods, where vulnerability to climate change is higher due to lack of infrastructure, these actions seek to generate a positive and sustainable impact, contributing to both the environment and the well-being of the most disadvantaged communities.

What Are Carbon Emissions and What Do They Cause?

Carbon emissions are the release of gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) into the atmosphere. These emissions are one of the main causes of global warming.

Main Sources of Carbon Emissions

– Combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) for energy generation and transportation

  • – Manufacturing industry
  • – Mining and other industrial processes
  • – Construction sector
  • – Digestive process of animals
  • Effects of Carbon Emissions
  • – Global warming
  • – Climate change
  • – Rising sea levels
  • – Saltwater intrusion
  • – Prolonged droughts
  • – Famine

The carbon footprint is an environmental indicator that measures the amount of greenhouse gases emitted as a result of a specific activity.
