The recycling of tires in Arroyito, Córdoba, reached a milestone: more than 20 tons were processed in two years.

This figure was exceeded on Tuesday, January 7, when the second load of End-of-Life Tires (ELT) was carried out through the Environment and Energy Area of the Municipality of Arroyito.

In the city, for more than two years, tires discarded by businesses, such as tire shops, are collected for subsequent final disposal. They are also received at the Municipal Yard.

This significantly reduces the entry of tons of waste into the Urban Solid Waste Site.

The recycling program

This action is part of the “Comprehensive Management System for End-of-Life Tires (ELT)” Ordinance implemented by the city and within the Provincial Plan for Environmental Management.

The latter coordinates the collection, transportation, and reuse of used tires, with the main objective of reducing waste in landfills.

Those who need to dispose of this waste can do so at the Municipal Yard. There is also the option for businesses to notify to be included in the differentiated ELT collection route of the city.

Tire pollution

Tire pollution.

Tires are an important source of environmental pollution. This is because they are made of rubber and other materials that contain toxic chemicals.
Pollution from this material occurs in different ways:
  • Through tire burning: it releases pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, benzene, styrene, and 1,3-butadiene, which contribute to global warming.
  • Tire wear: it releases particles and microplastics that contaminate water and soil.
  • Accumulation in landfills: tires can take hundreds of years to degrade and occupy space that could be used for other purposes.
  • Toxic leachates: heavy metals and chemical compounds from tires mix with other liquids in landfills, contaminating soils and aquifers.

How to reduce pollution

Among the measures to reduce pollution from this material, some actions can be implemented. Such as setting strict limits on emissions generated by tire wear; looking for ways to reuse rubber such as in asphalt; and also creating less abrasive or more porous street surfaces to reduce pollution.
