Reforestation: Native plants planted in a reclaimed space

Workers, students, and teachers participated in the reforestation with native plants of a reclaimed neighborhood space in San Luis.

It is a green area located in the Dupuy neighborhood, which was cleaned up by the environmental portfolio and the local municipality.

The site had been illegally occupied by a private individual who used it to store brick pallets, flammable waste, trucks, and semi-trailers.

The Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development, Federico Javier Cacace, and the head of the Environmental Monitoring, Control, and Inspection Area, Alex Simioli, led the action along with the Public Space Tree Planting team of the environmental portfolio.

“This situation represented a serious risk to the community due to the fire hazard and environmental impact on the vegetation surrounding the neighborhood,” said Simioli.

“The movement of machinery, the presence of engines, had turned the place that should be a green space into a dangerous area to walk through,” he emphasized.

How the space was recovered

Following a complaint, the Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development and the legal team of the State Prosecutor’s Office managed to reclaim this neighborhood space which, they indicated, also showed signs of contamination.

The municipality of Juana Koslay quickly contributed to its cleaning and waste removal.

The neighborhood residents had been reporting the illegal occupation of the public land for five years, where they left trucks, trailers, brick pallets, and a large amount of flammable waste, such as oils and fuels.

“All this was a danger due to the fire load it implied and the permanent risk that was very dangerous for the residents,” pointed out Simioli.

“In response to repeated demands, inspections, and complaints, a verification process was carried out,” they reported.

“As a result of these actions, and in collaboration with the legal team of the State Prosecutor’s Office, which initiated the legal process that allowed the eviction to be carried out,” they detailed.

Finally, by court order, a writ was issued obliging the occupying family to vacate the premises.

Subsequently, the Municipality of Juana Koslay, together with the environmental portfolio, quickly cleaned up the site.

With the planting of native plants, students also experienced a learning day about the importance of conserving green spaces and local flora. Since it not only serves an ornamental function but also interacts with native fauna and contributes to reducing the carbon footprint.
