San Miguel de Tucumán will have its first environmental school. This was announced by the mayor, Rossana Chahla, at the closing event of the 2024 cycle of the Municipal Environmental Education Program Educá.
The aim is to strengthen measures that help to address the consequences of climate change.
“This is a major issue on the global agenda and we are not immune to it. We all have to commit ourselves,” expressed Chahla.
“We have already seen floods in other parts of the world, we have seen droughts and large fires like the ones that occurred in Córdoba and what happened in Valencia with the floods,” she emphasized.
Environmental school in San Miguel: when will it open
According to Chahla, the Municipal Environmental School will start operating in 2025. “It will be a free space located on the premises of our municipal garden, built with a sustainable approach, where neighbors can learn about environmental education,” she explained.
She added, “We are working on everything related to mitigating impacts and adapting to climate change today, considering that Tucumán is a province that has problems with floods and has grown a lot.”
The Educá program
The Educá program throughout the year reached more than 25,000 students from 125 public and private schools in the province, with content and activities related to the environment.
The activities, which also included the training of over 1600 teachers, were carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Education of the Province.
The mayor emphasized that Educá was the first program launched by the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development created by the current administration, led by Julieta Migliavacca.
“In these months, it has been incredibly successful.” She also highlighted the support of Governor Osvaldo Jaldo and the Minister of Education, Susana Montaldo, in carrying out the environmental education program created by the municipality in schools throughout the province.
Actions in San Miguel
Chahla emphasized that, among other actions, the municipality is implementing plans to promote household waste separation as a tool to reduce environmental impact.
“We are raising awareness in every place, in every square, in every neighborhood, about this issue of waste separation at the source. This also helps to generate a circular economy,” she emphasized.
