The Wildlife Conservation Center of San Luis presented new equipment for the rehabilitation of recovered animals.
The radiological equipment was delivered as part of an environmental impact compensation agreement from the company PCR responsible for the wind farm ‘San Luis Norte’, located near Toro Negro, 64 kilometers from the capital city.
The technological addition will allow hundreds of recovered wild animals in the province to be treated and rehabilitated at the La Florida clinic.
Environmental compensation agreement
This significant step is being carried out through an environmental compensation agreement. It was established between the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and the wind company as a compensatory action for the impact caused by the installation of alternative energy equipment. The collaboration between both entities was crucial in this initiative.
The donation of radiological equipment is an example of how companies can contribute to environmental conservation and biodiversity.
The installation of radiological equipment adds to the ultrasound machine acquired last year, also donated by PCR. With the new equipment, it will be possible to identify pathologies and conditions of different specimens more quickly, including Andean condors, pumas, foxes, and turtles.
“This brings benefits, firstly because the injured small and large animals that arrive at the CCVS no longer need to be transported. Secondly, having access to these tools will allow the veterinary team at CCVS to obtain more precise diagnoses and improve the prognosis of the animals so that they can return to nature. In other words, this speeds up the recovery of wildlife and contributes to the daily work of the center’s veterinary team,” stated Cacace.
Fernando Díaz from PCR added: “Our company seeks to actively collaborate with institutions that work for the care of the environment and wildlife. Providing this equipment represents our commitment to the community and the government of San Luis, understanding the importance of working together for environmental conservation.”
Importance of collaboration
The Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development, Federico Cacace, and the Deputy Director of Protected Natural Areas and Provincial Parks, Giuliana Torti, participated in the presentation and introduction of the equipment’s use.
Also present were the Fauna Manager, Carla Ocaña Leroy, and the veterinarians Andrea Gangone and Julieta Poggi. In addition, the team of caregivers and park rangers from the Floro Faunistic Reserve of La Florida were present.
In recent years, Argentina has begun to stand out for its commitment to the development and implementation of renewable energies. This is happening in a global context of energy transition and environmental sustainability to counteract climate change.
The province of San Luis, in line with this reality, has adopted proactive policies to promote the generation of energy from clean and renewable sources.
In this sense, in August 2024, it was observed that 53% of alternative energy generation corresponds to wind energy. It was under this criterion that the environmental portfolio proposed creating an agreement that provides compensation for the impact caused by the installation of alternative energy equipment.
