Illegal bird trafficking hits Mendoza and turns the Seven-knives bird into a symbol of this practice.

The Ministry of Energy and Environment of Mendoza warned about the illegal possession and trafficking of wild birds, an activity that constitutes a crime and a serious form of animal abuse. The ministry reminded that there are channels available to report and stop this issue.

One of the most representative cases in the province is the siete cuchillos or pica huesos (Saltator aurantiirostris), a species targeted by illegal trafficking. This bird is often used in underground fights that end in its death.

“The use of these birds in confrontations is a brutal form of exploitation for profit,” explained Ignacio Haudet, Director of Biodiversity and Ecopark. The ministry highlights that this species has become a symbol in the fight against wildlife trafficking.

In addition to physical abuse, these practices affect the ecological balance, as the loss of individuals directly impacts the ecosystems where they play a key role.

Irreversible Damages and a Second Chance

Many of the rescued birds suffer severe injuries: head traumas, muscle atrophy, loss of phalanges, or wing and feather damage. While not all survive, some manage to rehabilitate and return to their natural habitat thanks to the work of specialists.

The Ministry insists that protecting wildlife is a collective task. Reporting illegal possession, hunting, or commercialization is essential to preserve Mendoza’s natural heritage and stop animal suffering.

“Each rescue is an opportunity to give freedom back to a bird and restore its role in nature,” stated from the Environment department. Rejecting trafficking is acting for biodiversity and for a more respectful relationship with our environment.

Illegal Bird Trafficking and Its Impact on Ecological Balance

Illegal trafficking of wild birds not only poses a direct threat to the captured species but also causes a profound imbalance in ecosystems. Birds play key roles such as seed dispersal, pest control, and pollination. When removed from their habitat, these natural processes are interrupted, affecting forest regeneration and soil health.

Moreover, the decrease of certain species can alter food chains, leading to uncontrolled increases or decreases in other animal populations. This loss of biodiversity also impacts ecosystem services that benefit humans, such as water quality, air, and nutrient cycles.

Each captured bird represents not only a life at risk but also one less piece in the complex machinery that maintains environmental balance. Therefore, combating illegal trafficking is not just a matter of animal protection: it is an urgent action to preserve ecosystem stability and the planet’s health.
