Plastic-Free July 2025: A New Edition of the Collective Challenge to Reduce Disposable Use

In the framework of the environmental awareness month, the organization Unplastify presents a new edition of the Challenge Plastic-Free July.

It is a free initiative that invites us to rethink our consumption habits and reduce the use of disposable plastics. This Thursday, on the international day free of plastic bags, the slogans are reinforced to raise awareness.

The program, which started on July 1st, proposes a 21-day journey to leave behind a common plastic and activate an individual and collective change in the face of the environmental crisis.

Plastic-Free July: a growing regional movement

Just over 9% of plastic is made from recycled material. Plastic pollution.

Under the motto “21 days with eyes on the sea”, this edition invites thousands of people to join through daily micro-challenges, inspiring slogans, practical resources and messages that will be shared via email and social networks.

In its previous editions, the Plastic-Free July Challenge brought together more than 3500 people from 27 countries. For 2025, more than 20 allied organizations and companies have joined forces to amplify this action throughout the region.

“This year we want more people to dare to look differently. The change begins when we stop being spectators and become protagonists,” expressed Juan Manuel Bruñol Silvani, coordinator of Community of Unplastify.

“This campaign seeks to amplify that energy: to show that we are not alone and that another way to engage with plastic is possible,” he added.

At the end of the 21 days, the challenge results will be published: which plastics were eliminated, how many people participated, and how this community story of environmental transformation was built.

This year’s challenge

Each participant will choose a plastic item from their daily routine to eliminate during the challenge: it can be a bag, a bottle, a wrapper, or any other disposable item.

Throughout the process, participants will be encouraged to document their experience and share it on social networks.

The published material will be part of a collaborative audiovisual production, which will show how this transition towards a more sustainable life free of single-use plastics is lived.

The challenge’s closing event will be open to the community, featuring the exclusive screening of the documentary “Eyes on the Sea”, starring Unplastify’s ambassador, Lulciana Gil.

The film combines art, science, and activism to reflect on our relationship with the ocean and plastics. This gathering will be a space for inspiration and connection among people committed to the environment.

Inspired by a global initiative

The Plastic-Free July Challenge x Unplastify® is inspired by the international campaign Plastic Free July, adapted to the Spanish-speaking context. The focus is on waste prevention from the root.

The proposal is based on environmental education, creativity, and collective action. All are fundamental pillars to combat plastic pollution and protect our ecosystems, especially the oceans.

To join the challenge and be part of this growing network, you can access through the official site of Unplastify or follow the campaign on social networks.
