The success of the Municipal Zoonosis Program in Córdoba: more than 10,000 companion animals were spayed/neutered in seven months

From January to the end of July, the Municipal Zoonosis Program of Córdoba presented encouraging statistics. A total of 10,839 free sterilizations were carried out on dogs and cats in the city.

The objective is to implement birth control in animals in the provincial capital. Of that total, 5037 were sterilizations of canines and 5802 of felines.

The sterilizations were carried out at the three Centers for the Control of Reproduction and Responsible Pet Ownership located in the Alberdi neighborhood, La France, and Villa Allende Parque, in addition to the mobile stations that visited the CPCs and various city spaces.

Córdoba Zoonosis: requirements for sterilizing pets

Sterilizations are performed on animals from four months of age. To access the service, residents who schedule an appointment must have an ID with an address in the city, or a rental contract to prove it.

Appointments are scheduled on Thursdays, by calling from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at 0800-888-0404 or through VEDI 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In the case of animals visibly pregnant, they are given priority for appointments over others and do not need to obtain a prior appointment. In these cases, female dogs can come in at 7:15 and 13:15, and female cats at 09:45 and 15:30, at any of the centers, except for the Villa Allende Parque Center, which only attends in the morning (female dogs can come in at 7:15 and female cats at 9:45).

Why sterilizing pets is important

Sterilizing pets, both dogs and cats, is a fundamental practice for responsible animal care and for public health. Here I explain why sterilizing pets is important, from different perspectives.

Among some points:

  • Controlling overpopulation

Every year, thousands of dogs and cats are born without enough homes to care for them. Many end up abandoned, on the streets, or in overcrowded shelters.
Sterilization is the most effective and ethical way to prevent unwanted litters and reduce abandonment.

Pet health The importance of pet care and health.

  • Improves quality and life expectancy

Sterilization helps prevent a series of serious and potentially fatal diseases, such as; in females: breast tumors, uterine infections (pyometra), ovarian cysts; and in males: testicular tumors, prostate problems, excessive marking.

Also, it reduces behaviors related to sexual anxiety or heat.

  • Improves coexistence and behavior

Castrated animals tend to be calmer and less territorial. Fights between males decrease; the tendency to escape or roam decreases; avoids urine marking and meowing or barking due to heat.

  • Contributes to collective well-being and public health

Fewer animals on the streets also mean less risk of bites or traffic accidents; reduction in transmission of zoonotic diseases, such as rabies, leptospirosis, or toxoplasmosis; fewer street fights or offspring born in precarious and unprotected conditions.

  • Is an act of responsible ownership

Sterilizing demonstrates an ethical commitment to animal life. In many municipalities, it is even part of public policies for population control through free or low-cost campaigns.
