Houses made with plastic bottles: the Cordoban innovation redefining sustainable housing in Argentina

The Cordoba-based company 3C Construcciones is transforming the concept of housing by demonstrating that it is possible to build comfortable and durable homes using recycled plastic as raw material. Their proposal combines innovation, social inclusion, and environmental commitment, promoting a model of sustainable development with real impact on communities.

The project was born under a triple impact perspective: economic, social, and ecological. Its founder, Lucas Recalde, sought not only to reduce plastic waste but also to generate employment and training for young people and those in vulnerable situations. Thus, the company builds homes, but also opportunities and a sense of belonging.

Since its inception, 3C has promoted a broader reflection on the role of housing as a tool for social transformation. The company’s name refers to the three constructions that, according to their philosophy, sustain a more just society: the human, the community, and the home.

Plastic, from waste to resource

For 3C, plastic is not an enemy, but a mismanaged resource. Through a recycling and pressing system, waste is transformed into structural blocks that are placed inside iron or wooden frames and covered with traditional materials.

The result is homes that are built in two-thirds of the time of a conventional construction, with a smaller ecological footprint and superior thermal and acoustic insulation. Additionally, this system requires less water and energy during its execution, reducing the environmental costs of the process.

Each reused plastic block prevents tons of waste from ending up in landfills, while adding value to what is discarded: both the materials and the people involved in the production chain.

A social model that builds community

3C Construcciones operates under a network socio-productive model. Each plant or workshop works alongside parishes, NGOs, and cooperatives that train and employ people with difficulties accessing the labor market. It also involves universities and local governments, creating a circuit that combines circular economy and social inclusion.

This approach demonstrates that sustainability depends not only on materials but also on the people who transform them. By turning plastic into bricks, 3C creates employment, housing, and collective sense, driving a structural change in the way of building.

An inspiring example: the first sustainable kindergarten in Mendoza

In 2022, the company brought its proposal to Mendoza with the construction of the Municipal Nursery “Mundo de Exploradores”, in the Sol y Sierra neighborhood of Godoy Cruz. It was the first educational building in the province made with walls of recycled PET, iron, and wood worked by urban recyclers.

The project, inaugurated in 2024, covers 246 m² and features solar panels and sustainable water heaters. Its efficient design in thermal and energy matters was recognized as a provincial model of ecological construction. Moreover, the coordinated work with neighbors allowed for training in carpentry, electricity, and dry construction.

The initiative set a precedent: it showed that waste can be the foundation of a more humane development model, where sustainability and social justice are built from the ground up.

The advantages of houses made with recycled plastic

Houses made with recycled bottles offer environmental, economic, and housing benefits.

  • Thermal and acoustic insulation: pressed PET walls reduce heat and noise exchange, creating more comfortable and efficient spaces.

  • Resistance and durability: recycled blocks withstand humidity, impacts, and fire, prolonging the structure’s lifespan.

  • Reduction of emissions: part of the cement —one of the materials with the highest carbon footprint— is replaced, reducing environmental impact.

  • Resource savings: by requiring less water, energy, and virgin materials, costs are reduced, and waste management is optimized.

These constructions also promote energy autonomy, as they easily adapt to solar systems and rainwater collection. Their low maintenance and structural flexibility make them an ideal solution for rural areas, vulnerable neighborhoods, or emergency housing projects.

The progress of 3C Construcciones consolidates a global trend: redefining the concept of housing to adapt it to the climatic and social challenges of the 21st century. With creativity and environmental awareness, the company demonstrates that building with plastic is not a utopia, but a possible path towards a more equitable and sustainable future.
