The global race for clean and sustainable energy sources continues to escalate, literally. In a new milestone for wind energy, the Spanish company Nabrawind Technologies SL., based in Navarra, announced together with the Chinese company Golden Ocean Corporation the installation of a 190-meter-high wind turbine tower in Chinese territory.
This project marks a significant advance in the search for higher energy efficiency in regions with uniform but low-speed winds.
Since their inception, renewable energies have been preferred for their low initial cost and high long-term profitability, especially due to the reduced price per kWh generated. Among them, wind energy stands out for its long lifespan, minimal maintenance, and great production capacity.
Why raise wind turbines?
Wind turbines are systems composed of moving and fixed components that transform the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity. They are installed on towers of great height because at higher altitudes, the air flow is more intense and constant, free from obstacles such as buildings or vegetation that could interfere.
Additionally, the uniformity of the wind at those higher layers allows the turbines to operate more efficiently. To function properly, they require a sustained minimum speed, and if the wind is irregular, the performance drops drastically.
The Nabralift HH190 tower: design, performance, and international collaboration
The model chosen for this project is the Nabralift HH190, the tallest tower in Nabrawind’s catalog. Its structure combines 95 meters of self-supporting base with a conventional tubular tower at the top. By raising the hub to 190 meters, a 20% increase in energy production of the wind turbine is estimated.
The turbine will be provided by the company Envision, although the specific model is still under evaluation, as it will depend on the site conditions. Although it will not be the largest wind turbine on the planet, it is expected to generate a significant amount of energy.
“The sky is no longer the limit,” say from Nabrawind, which also offers solutions such as Nabrajoint, BladeRunner, and Nabrabase, all focused on tall wind towers.
Wind energy sets a new record with the tallest tower.
Companies involved and leadership in renewable energies
The project is led by Golden Ocean Corporation, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation, a state entity specialized in wind energy infrastructure. On the other hand, Envision is one of the leading wind turbine manufacturers globally, ranking fourth globally and second in China by installed capacity.
The execution of this record tower requires the coordination of multiple actors, from structural design to site selection and technological integration.
Beyond the technical aspects: strategic vision and energy future
This development not only represents an advancement in wind technology, but also a commitment to more efficient, decentralized, and sustainable energy models. The installation of ultra-tall towers allows for better utilization of wind resources in areas where it was previously unfeasible, and opens the door to new hybrid configurations with other renewable sources.
Although the Asian giant also claims to have developed a form of unlimited and waste-free nuclear energy, this project demonstrates that wind energy remains a key piece in the global energy transition.
