From South Korea, the first autonomous hydrogen truck recognized among the best inventions of 2025

The revolution of sustainable heavy transport has taken a decisive step with the development of the XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen autonomous truck, a joint creation of Hyundai Motor Company and the artificial intelligence firm PlusAI.

This Class 8 vehicle, designed for long-distance logistics operations, has been distinguished by TIME magazine as one of the “Best Inventions of 2025”, for its ability to integrate clean propulsion and advanced autonomy into a single system.

Cutting-edge technology: hydrogen and level 4 autonomous driving

The XCIENT Fuel Cell incorporates Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell platform —the first mass-produced heavy hydrogen truck worldwide— alongside the SuperDrive level 4 autonomous driving system developed by PlusAI.

This synergy allows for emission-free routes, with high energy efficiency, reduced operational costs, and greater logistical safety.

“This recognition from TIME is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration,” expressed Chul Youn Park, senior vice president of Hyundai Motor Company.

International deployment and operational viability

Since its launch in 2020, the XCIENT Fuel Cell has been implemented in 10 countries, accumulating more than 10 million miles traveled.

In the United States, it participates in the NorCAL ZERO project, with 30 active units in the ports of Oakland and Richmond, and in the HTWO initiative, which includes 21 trucks supplying the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) plant in Georgia.

These implementations demonstrate the operational viability of the model and Hyundai’s commitment to a decarbonized logistics ecosystem.

Artificial intelligence: safety, efficiency, and sustainability

The AI applied to transport enhances safety through systems that detect human errors and respond to emergencies. It also optimizes routes in real-time, manages fleets, predicts maintenance, and reduces CO₂ emissions. Key benefits include:
