A new Andean condor was born in Mendoza, a key milestone that reinforces the conservation of the endangered species

Mendoza gave good news to conservation: recently, a new chick of Andean condor was born in the Parque Provincial Tupungato.

This event is key because it positions the province once again as a key reproductive refuge for this endangered species.

The male specimen was recorded by personnel from the Fauna of the Ministry of Energy and Environment of the province.

The birth confirmed the effectiveness of the conservation programs developed by official organizations and organizations in the Mendoza mountain range.

A milestone that ratifies coordinated work

Personnel from the Fauna of the Ministry of Energy and Environment confirmed that the chick remains with its parents in an active nest located on rocky walls of the provincial park.

The confirmation of the finding came through teams from the Directorate of Biodiversity and Ecopark, along with the SOS Wild Action Foundation and the Andean Condor Conservation Program-Bioandina Foundation.

The record was part of active conservation actions carried out by the Ministry together with foundations and NGOs.

Among these actions, the simultaneous censuses of Andean condor conducted by the Mendoza government along with various entities stand out.

These operations consist of coordinated monitoring at different points in the mountain range.

They are relevant because they allow obtaining comparable data on the presence, distribution, and population dynamics of the species.

The information collected is key for planning conservation measures in the future throughout the mountain region.

In this regard, at the beginning of this month, even the record for a simultaneous sighting of condors in the province was broken.

A few weeks ago, a family managed to observe and film more than 90 Andean condors feeding on a dead cow.

This is the largest congregation documented simultaneously in Argentina, surpassing the previous record of 80 specimens recorded in San Luis.

The ecological role of the Andean condor in Mendoza’s ecosystems

The Andean condor was declared a Provincial Natural Monument and is considered a threatened species globally due to its vulnerable situation.

This bird plays an essential role in the environmental health of the high-altitude ecosystems in Mendoza and the entire Andean mountain range.

Its function as the main scavenger helps control pathogens and maintain the ecological balance in mountain environments by removing animal carcasses.

Therefore, each natural birth represents an indicator of the effectiveness of the monitoring and preservation actions developed in the provincial protected areas.

How the monitoring of the Andean condor chick in Mendoza continues

The authorities confirmed that the new chick will be monitored to assess its development in the coming months and years.

This decision was made considering the prolonged dependence of juveniles on their parents during the growth period.

The Ministry reiterated the request to mountaineers and visitors to avoid approaching active nests. They also requested immediate reporting of any wildlife situation at risk.

Citizen participation is crucial in conservation tasks, as highlighted by the provincial agency.

As an example, they pointed out the recent rescue of a female condor in Tunuyán. After rehabilitation, she was released in the Manzano Histórico-Portillo de Piuquenes Protected Natural Area.

The reintegration was carried out under the corresponding protocols that ensure the animal’s well-being and its adaptation to the natural environment.

The importance of protected areas for the Andean condor

The birth in the Parque Provincial Tupungato reaffirmed the fundamental role of protected areas in the conservation of endangered species.

These spaces provide the necessary conditions for the reproduction and development of Andean condor populations in Mendoza.

Specialists highlighted that each successful reproductive event contributes to the recovery of the species throughout the Andean region.

The coordination between official organizations, foundations, and the community allows strengthening long-term conservation strategies in the province.
