192 Green Iguanas Rescued in Oaxaca and the Impact of Illegal Trafficking on Mexico’s Biodiversity Exposed

A total of 192 specimens of green iguana were rescued in the municipality of Matías Romero Avendaño. Consequently, the operation uncovered a suspected case of illegal wildlife trafficking.

The discovery occurred on a bus coming from Coatzacoalcos heading to Salina Cruz. Additionally, the animals were crowded in cardboard boxes.

In response to this situation, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection intervened. Therefore, a rescue and evaluation protocol was activated.

Critical conditions and immediate response

The procedure allowed the identification of 161 live specimens. However, 31 were already deceased. During the inspection, the reptiles showed signs of stress. Additionally, they exhibited behaviors typical of recently captured animals.

This confirmed their direct extraction from the natural habitat. Consequently, their urgent release was determined. Likewise, the disposal of the deceased specimens was carried out under sanitary control. In this way, environmental risks were avoided.

Release and joint work of authorities

The release was carried out in a suitable ecosystem. Consequently, an area of low deciduous forest was chosen. This environment offers food and shelter. Additionally, it allows for the reintegration of the specimens.

The operation was supported by the Secretariat of National Defense and the Secretariat of the Navy. Therefore, security was ensured. State forces also participated. In this way, the institutional response was strengthened.

Illegal trafficking: a persistent threat

The case reflects a widespread issue in Oaxaca. Consequently, wildlife trafficking directly impacts the ecosystems.

This activity includes illegal capture, transport, and commercialization. Additionally, it reduces wild populations. Likewise, it generates ecological imbalances. Therefore, it affects entire food chains. In this way, environmental surveillance is essential. Thus, the aim is to curb these practices.

The green iguana and its role in ecosystems

The green iguana is a key species in tropical environments. Consequently, it contributes to the dispersal of seeds. Additionally, it is part of the food chain. Therefore, its presence indicates ecological balance.

It is protected by regulations such as NOM-059. Likewise, it is included in international agreements like CITES. This implies that its trade is regulated. In this way, the aim is to prevent its overexploitation.

Conservation and citizen commitment

The authorities highlighted the importance of reporting. Consequently, they invite the citizenship to collaborate.

Additionally, controls and inspections will be reinforced. Therefore, the aim is to prevent new cases. Likewise, the protection of wildlife requires sustained actions. In this way, an environmental awareness is promoted.

Ultimately, the rescue in Oaxaca exposes the conservation challenges. Thus, it reaffirms the need to protect biodiversity against illegal trafficking.
