Release of Yaguara: a milestone in jaguar conservation in Bolivia after Amazon fires 2024

The release of Yaguara represents a crucial milestone for jaguars in Bolivia, especially after the forest fires devastated the Amazon in 2024. This rescued female, after a hard process of recovery, is ready to return to her natural habitat.

An important step for the conservation of the jaguar in Bolivia

Found dehydrated and captive, Yaguara spent two years rehabilitating to regain her hunting instinct and strength. Her return symbolizes a firm rejection of habitat destruction and the illegal wildlife trade.

Specialists confirmed that Yaguara had never had contact with humans nor had been a victim of trafficking, which facilitated her reintegration into the wild. The NGO Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi expanded her habitat in the Ambue Ari park, investing 70,000 dollars in a 10,000 square meter space, full of vegetation and a lagoon.

In 2024, Yaguara was rescued from a fire in Santa Cruz, marking a milestone in Bolivia’s efforts to protect its native wildlife. Activist Tania Baltazar, who leads the rehabilitation project, highlights the importance of this release in the country’s history.

During her recovery, Yaguara displayed natural behaviors such as swimming and hunting, observed through camera traps. This progress ensures her ability to survive in the wild.

To ensure a responsible release, the use of a satellite collar is planned to monitor Yaguara after her return to the forest. This device will help collect essential data for future conservation initiatives.

The jaguar faces serious threats in Bolivia, such as deforestation and illegal trafficking. Recently, the Agro-environmental Tribunal promoted measures to protect these felines, a historic step in defending the country’s biodiversity.

Protecting the jaguar is crucial to maintaining the balance of ecosystems, as its extinction could significantly alter the regional biodiversity, affecting even the health of forests and water.
