Cuba’s first “solinera” boosts electric mobility and transforms life amid the energy crisis

Amid prolonged blackouts and fuel shortages, Cuba began to experience new energy alternatives. In the city of Santa Clara, the inauguration of the country’s first public solar station marked a significant change for hundreds of families.

The so-called “solinera” allows charging electric vehicles and household devices using solar energy. Additionally, it became a key point for residents from different localities, including inhabitants of Cienfuegos who travel more than 70 kilometers to access the service.

Consequently, many people found a concrete solution to the transportation difficulties and electrical instability. The impact is especially felt in rural communities where mobility increasingly depends on electric means.

An alternative for daily life

The new system changed the routine of numerous families. The electric tricycles, used for working, commuting, and transporting goods, can now be recharged without relying on an unstable electrical grid.

Furthermore, the station has 32 power outlets and areas designated for charging appliances and cooking during power outages. This represents a relief for households that spend hours without energy supply.

On the other hand, residents began using the space to keep fans, lamps, and small household appliances running. Thus, solar energy ceased to be a distant technology to become part of daily life.

A model of cooperation and energy transition

The initiative was driven by Gomate, a small company linked to the growing Cuban private sector. The project also received government support to install solar panels and develop the necessary infrastructure.

Additionally, the “solinera” operates for free through a registration system that organizes community use. This allowed for expanded access to energy in sectors especially affected by the crisis.

In parallel, the project began to spark interest as a replicable model for other regions of the country. The combination of renewable energies and community solutions appears as an alternative to the dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The environmental and social benefits of the initiative

The implementation of community solar stations provides multiple ecological and social benefits. Firstly, it reduces the use of polluting fuels and decreases emissions associated with traditional transportation.

Likewise, solar energy helps alleviate pressure on a vulnerable electrical grid highly dependent on imported fuels. This contributes to improving energy stability and reducing operational costs.

Moreover, electric mobility promotes a reduction in noise and air pollution in cities. In turn, it strengthens the energy autonomy of communities facing fuel access difficulties.

Additionally, such initiatives promote more sustainable habits and accelerate the transition towards less polluting energy models that are more resilient to climatic and economic crises.

The growth of solar energy in Cuba

In recent years, Cuba has intensified its efforts to expand renewable energies. Currently, about 10% of the country’s electricity comes from clean sources, mainly solar energy.

However, the energy crisis and the fuel shortage have accelerated the need to seek sustainable alternatives. As a result, projects related to solar panels, energy storage, and electric mobility have begun to multiply.

Moreover, the island’s climatic conditions offer great potential for solar development. Therefore, specialists believe that this type of infrastructure could play a strategic role in Cuba’s energy future.

Finally, the experience of Santa Clara demonstrates how environmental innovation can improve quality of life and generate new opportunities in contexts of high energy vulnerability.
