A procedure carried out in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Almagro led to the rescue of 14 Basset Hound dogs that were kept in conditions incompatible with animal welfare. The intervention also resulted in the closure of an illegal breeding facility that was operating outside the current regulations.
The measure was authorized by Judge María Mercedes Maiorano, head of the Criminal, Misdemeanor, and Offenses Court No. 3, following an investigation initiated by the Judicial Investigation Corps (CIJ) of the City Public Prosecutor’s Office.
It all began with a neighbor’s report alerting about possible mistreatment situations within the establishment. Based on this information, investigators gathered sufficient evidence to request a search warrant and verify the condition of the animals.

Unsanitary conditions and risks to animal health
During the inspection, authorities found 14 unneutered specimens, consisting of eight males and six females. The dogs were in a deteriorated environment, with accumulation of excrement and evident sanitary deficiencies.
Additionally, the presence of insects and rodents was detected at the site, factors that increased the risk of diseases and further deteriorated the quality of life of the animals.
Moreover, the veterinarians involved in the operation confirmed various injuries associated with lack of hygiene, basic care, and adequate medical attention. These conditions reflected a scenario of prolonged neglect and violation of animal welfare.
Joint effort to protect animals
The search was coordinated by the CIJ and involved the participation of the Environmental Crimes Division and the City Police Dog Division.
Furthermore, the General Directorate of Domestic Dogs and Cats and the General Directorate of Environmental Control of the Buenos Aires Government collaborated, strengthening a multidisciplinary intervention aimed at ensuring the protection of the specimens.
Subsequently, by order of prosecutor Blas Matías Michienzi, head of the Specialized Environmental Unit (UFEMA), all the dogs were identified with microchips to ensure their traceability and health monitoring.
The role of the shelter and judicial actions
After the rescue, the animals were transferred to the El Campito shelter, an organization dedicated to the recovery and protection of dogs that are victims of abandonment and abuse.
In this space, they will receive veterinary check-ups, medical treatments, and specialized assistance to promote their physical and emotional rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the Justice system charged the person responsible for the breeding facility with alleged acts of animal abuse and for non-compliance related to the care of domestic animals, in a case that is still under investigation.

Characteristics and needs of the Basset Hound breed
The Basset Hound is a breed originally developed for hunting by scent tracking. It is characterized by its short legs, elongated body, and a highly developed sense of smell, considered one of the most precise among dogs.
Despite its calm appearance, it requires frequent veterinary check-ups due to its predisposition to joint problems, obesity, and ear conditions. Therefore, it needs clean environments, balanced nutrition, and moderate physical activity.
Additionally, it is a social and affectionate breed that forms strong bonds with people. When subjected to confinement, overcrowding, or lack of care, it can develop physical and behavioral disorders that seriously affect its well-being.
A recurring issue in different regions
The Almagro case adds to other recent procedures carried out in different parts of the country. In Guaymallén, Mendoza province, more than 80 dogs were rescued, presenting serious health problems.
Similarly, in La Plata, authorities dismantled a clandestine breeding facility and recovered 13 animals that were in a state of abandonment.
Meanwhile, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Saavedra, 23 adult dogs were rescued, kept crammed in cages and under poor sanitary conditions. These precedents reflect the need to strengthen controls, promote responsible ownership, and advance the effective protection of animals as a fundamental part of respectful coexistence with the environment and urban biodiversity.
