Chile demonstrates that a comprehensive strategy can reduce childhood obesity and promote sustainable eating habits

Chile has established itself as an international benchmark in healthy eating policies following the publication of a study confirming the positive impact of a comprehensive strategy aimed at combating childhood obesity.

The research, published in a renowned scientific journal, analyzed the results of the Food Labeling and Advertising Law, implemented in 2016 to address an issue affecting more than half of school-aged children.

Moreover, the study provides one of the strongest pieces of evidence recorded to date on the effectiveness of combining different regulatory tools to improve food quality and reduce excess weight in childhood.

An integrated response to a health challenge

For years, Chile recorded some of the highest rates of overweight and childhood obesity in Latin America. This situation increased the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders later in life.

In response to this scenario, the country implemented an innovative legislation that brought together three complementary measures. On one hand, it introduced warning labels on products with high levels of sugars, saturated fats, sodium, or calories.

Additionally, it restricted the sale of these products within educational establishments. At the same time, it established limitations on advertising directed at children, reducing their exposure to messages that promote unhealthy foods.

Results showing concrete changes

To evaluate the impact of the initiative, researchers analyzed information from more than 300,000 students aged between 4 and 6 years across the country.

The results showed that, after 18 months of exposure to the first stage of the regulation, the likelihood of excess weight decreased in both girls and boys. Even during the first six months of implementation, improvements began to be observed.

On the other hand, the study identified more noticeable effects in certain groups, especially in girls with low birth weight and in students from urban and subsidized schools, highlighting the ability of public policies to generate changes in different sectors of the population.

How to incorporate natural foods into children’s daily diet

The Chilean experience also highlights the importance of facilitating healthy food choices both inside and outside the home. One of the most effective strategies is to increase the availability of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and fresh foods in everyday meals.

Additionally, small actions can generate significant changes, such as replacing sugary drinks with water, offering fruits as snacks, including vegetables in regular preparations, or cooking as a family to foster a positive relationship with food.

Similarly, it is essential to gradually reduce the consumption of ultra-processed products and prioritize natural options that provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber, essential elements for child growth and development.

Healthy eating and environmental benefits

The promotion of fresh and minimally processed foods not only favors human health but also contributes to environmental sustainability.

Food systems based on natural products generally require less packaging, generate less waste, and demand lower levels of industrial processing, thus reducing the energy consumption associated with their production.

In this context, Chile’s experience demonstrates that comprehensive policies can transform food environments, improve the health of new generations, and at the same time, promote more environmentally responsible consumption habits and natural resource use.
