Significant rescue operation of a marsh deer on the Pan-American Highway

A major emergency operation for the assistance of wildlife was deployed on the Pan-American Highway following the discovery of a marsh deer, one of Argentina’s threatened large mammals, near Campana.

After the alert issued by rangers from the Ciervo de los Pantanos National Park, a rescue protocol was activated involving the coordinated work of different institutions. Fundación Temaikèn participated in the operation providing specialized assistance, stabilization, and subsequent transfer of the animal to its Species Recovery Center.

The specimen, an adult male, was detected around 6:45 a.m. at kilometer 65 of the Pan-American Highway, heading towards the province. The intervention was carried out in coordination between the rangers of the National Park, the Buenos Aires Province Environment authorities, and the Ciervo de los Pantanos Technical Scientific Committee, of which Fundación Temaikèn is a part as a center specialized in the rescue and rehabilitation of this species declared a Provincial Natural Monument.

After being stabilized and receiving first aid, the deer was transferred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Species Recovery Center of Fundación Temaikèn, where it received urgent care. Clinical studies, blood tests, ultrasounds, X-rays, and thorough veterinary evaluations were conducted there to assess its health status and determine the possible causes that led the animal to this emergency situation.

Rescue of a Marsh Deer

Currently, the medical team continues to evaluate different hypotheses, including the possibility that the specimen was suffering from a disease that left it vulnerable or that it had been hit by a vehicle, one of the main threats this species faces in its natural environment.

The rescued deer belongs to the Paraná Delta population, considered endangered according to the categorization of the Argentine Society for the Study of Mammals (SAREM). This species, one of the great representatives of Argentine wildlife, inhabits a unique ecosystem of great biodiversity, where it coexists with increasing human activity that poses significant challenges for its conservation.

From Fundación Temaikèn, the rescue team works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, responding to wildlife emergencies. Every life is valuable, and each rescue represents a new opportunity for these animals to recover and, when possible, return to nature.

This case represents an extraordinary challenge as it involves an adult male of a threatened species. Its recovery requires specialized infrastructure, experience, and trained professionals to carry out a rehabilitation that contributes to the conservation of the marsh deer and the Paraná Delta ecosystem.

This rescue reflects the importance of having rapid response networks, joint work between institutions, and teams prepared to act in the face of wildlife emergencies. It also reminds us that, even a few kilometers from large urban centers, we coexist with unique species that are part of Argentina’s natural heritage.

Each marsh deer represents an opportunity for the conservation of a threatened species. Each rescue not only aims to save a life but also to protect the future of one of the most emblematic species of the Paraná Delta.
