The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) reported that by the end of 2025, the installed renewable capacity reached 5.2 TW, representing 49.5% of the global total.
This milestone reflects unprecedented growth in the annual addition of renewable capacity, which reached 693 GW in 2025, consolidating a positive trend over the last 25 years.
Renewable Electricity Generation
In 2024, renewable electricity generation grew by 9.8%, reaching 31.7% of global production, with a total of 9,836 TWh. In contrast, fossil energies barely increased by 1.4% in the same period.
To meet the global electrification target of 35% of final energy demand by 2035, renewables must expand to cover 78% of global electricity generation, that is, 2.5 times the current level.
Regional Distribution of Renewable Generation (2024)
- Asia: 4,589 TWh (+14.3%), leading global growth thanks to solar and wind energy.
- Europe: 1,758 TWh (+7.2%), with strong momentum from solar and hydroelectric power.
- North America: 1,535 TWh (+5.8%).
- South America: 1,047 TWh (+2.9%).
- Eurasia: 411 TWh (+11.9%).
- Africa: 227 TWh (+5.7%), with advances in all sources except geothermal.
- Oceania: 138 TWh (+3.4%).
- Middle East: 76 TWh (+17.3%), the highest regional growth rate.
- Central America and the Caribbean: 55 TWh (+5.8%).
Solar energy and wind energy continue to lead renewable expansion, followed by hydroelectric and other sources such as biomass and geothermal.
Irena’s Statements
The Director-General, Francesco La Camera, highlighted:
“The world is coming together around electrification as a fundamental pillar of the energy transition, with renewable electricity as the main driver. We must now quickly transition from fossil fuels to clean electricity in buildings, transport, and industry.”
Review of Figures and Trends
Revised statistics show that although the share of renewables in total capacity expansion dropped from 92.7% in 2024 to 85.7% in 2025, the overall trend remains positive. The deployment of clean energies continues to far exceed the growth of fossil sources.
The advance of renewable energies in 2025 marks a turning point: almost half of the global capacity is now clean. However, the challenge towards 2035 requires multiplying the current renewable generation by 2.5 to meet global electrification commitments.
The energy transition is underway, but it requires accelerating investments, public policies, and international cooperation to consolidate a sustainable future.
