The province of Buenos Aires is full of quiet tourist spots where nature reigns, which many people overlook. One of them is Paulino Island.

This small island territory is located on the Río de la Plata and has everything you need to enjoy a weekend in the great outdoors, including attractions, beaches, green spaces, and even vineyards. Fortunately, accessing Paulino Island is very easy thanks to the availability of transportation and its proximity to some of the largest cities in Buenos Aires.

History of Paulino Island

Paulino Island, for much of its history, was a sector of Santiago Island. However, with the construction of the canal that allows access to the Port of La Plata, the territory was divided, giving rise to Paulino Island. After this event, the land portion was named “Santiago Este Island”.

Its name changed at the end of the 19th century in homage to the tourism entrepreneur Paulino Pagani. A native of Italy, Pagani arrived in the province of Buenos Aires in 1887 and, despite limited resources, chose this spot as his new home and began to develop his tourism facet. Due to his work, which allowed the current development of the place, the name was modified in his honor.

Tourist Attractions of Paulino Island

Paulino Island is south of the Santiago River, has beaches on the Río de la Plata, and also shares the landscape with Borsani Island. Therefore, there are plenty of tourist alternatives to enjoy the local nature. Visitors to the island can take boat rides, eat something delicious at its small gastronomic spots, and even spend the night at an inn.

Vineyards and Tastings

The most striking activity on the island is to visit its vineyards. Just meters from the Río de la Plata, many locals are dedicated to producing “coastal wine” and organize tastings. At the same time, its fertile lands have also allowed the creation of large areas for growing vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

How to Get to Paulino Island?

Visiting Paulino Island is not complex. Those who wish to explore this territory, which is a maximum of 4.3 kilometers long and 2.9 kilometers wide, can travel from:

  • Berisso, via a road called Palo Blanco, which connects the city to the island via a bridge.
  • The Santiago Canal, on a short boat trip
  • Ensenada, also with water transfers.
