In its 17th ordinary session of the year, the Córdoba Unicameral approved a modification of Law 6,964, on Protected Natural Areas, with the aim of protecting endangered animal species and recognizing “natural monuments” of native flora and fauna.

Project and Legislative Changes

The approved project, promoted by Abraham Galo (Hacemos Unidos por Córdoba) and Brenda Austin (Unión Cívica Radical), involves the modification of four articles (33, 34, 35, and 36) to prevent alterations to their environments, commercial exploitation, hunting, or any action that puts species at risk.

The initiative incorporates in the section Provincial Natural Monuments (article 33) an item on “things, living species of animals or plants of aesthetic, historical, or scientific interest,” expanding the concept beyond “things.”

Support from Foundations and Universities

Members of Fundación Natura, Fundación Mil Aves, Reserva Tatú Carreta, and research teams from the National University of Córdoba were present and supported the project. They highlighted the lack of a regulatory framework in Córdoba for the protection of natural monuments.

Opinions of the Promoters

Galo emphasized that the approved modifications “have a clearly environmental perspective and also have a Cordovan identity,” adding that “recognizing and establishing flora and fauna monuments vindicates our roots, culture, and identity.”

Austin pointed out that “this regulation demonstrates that it is possible to work together on issues that merit unanimous support” and specified that the modification aims to protect species of flora and fauna, expanding the concept of natural monuments to include endangered species.

History and Objective of the Law

Law 6,964, in its original version published on August 22, 1983, establishes the rules that will govern provincial natural areas and their wild environments. The amendment to the law seeks to strengthen the protection of the flora and fauna of the province of Córdoba.
