Boost the excitement: a new mountain bongo calf is born

The Woburn Safari Park, in England, is celebrating the arrival of an antelope that is part of the most endangered species on Earth: the eastern mountain bongo. Currently, there are less than 100 specimens of this animal in the wild worldwide, making its conservation essential to keep this endangered species alive.

However, a birth would bring some relief to the situation of the eastern mountain bongo, a species characterized by its particular brown fur with white stripes. Among the main reasons for the loss of these specimens are human hunting and the loss of their natural habitat.

Othaya, the first-time bongo mother, gave birth to a male calf on October 16th, after a long labor process. The birth of this antelope is giving hope to specialists working on the conservation of this species.

Both the mother and the newborn are being kept in a stable environment, where they will remain together for a while to strengthen their bond in a safe and controlled environment, as reported by the park.

## The authorities’ plan to preserve this species

The park authorities’ decision to keep the mother and the cub together was made with the aim of ensuring that the small antelope feeds properly and that the mother recovers well from childbirth.

Furthermore, this young antelope is destined to contribute to the conservation of this species in the future, although the conditions are not suitable for it to do so in the wild.

On the other hand, park caretakers are hoping that once it reaches maturity, the animal can be moved to another wildlife reserve where it can form its own reproductive group.

## The peculiarities of the mountain bongo

This antelope is known for living in pairs or small family groups, not to mention its large size, as it can measure up to 1.30 meters in height and 2.50 meters in length, weighing around 400 kilograms.

However, despite its large size, they often go unnoticed thanks to their coloration, which, while quite striking, helps them blend perfectly into the jungle.
