The Mayor of **Bariloche**, Walter Cortés, has instructed the Planning, Special Works, and Protected Areas departments for [the recovery and enhancement](https://noticiasambientales.com/turismo/parques-nacionales-y-chubut-apuestan-por-fomentar-el-turismo-en-areas-protegidas/) of **Huemul Island**, with the aim of reactivating the **lake excursion** that was interrupted over 20 years ago.
## Current State and Recovery Plan for Huemul Island
The island’s dock is in very poor condition and has been closed by the Naval Prefecture. The buildings in the promenade are vandalized and looted, requiring a significant **investment for their recovery**.
The Municipality has started preparing wood from fallen trees in the **Llao Llao Forest** to rebuild the dock and clear paths invaded by **grasses and fallen trees**.
A delegation led by the Secretary of Planning, Sofía Maggi, conducted an **inspection of the island** to coordinate the works. Despite the Prefecture’s ban, visitors access the island in private and rowing boats from **Playa Bonita**, just 1,500 meters away.
## Collaboration and Conservation
The reconstruction of the dock and the work on paths and the forest will be the beginning of enhancing this tourist asset. The Municipality will engage with entities interested in conservation, such as the **National University of Comahue** and the **Pinos Network**, to collaborate on the works.
## History of Huemul Island
The island covers 75 hectares and has a rich history, including the legendary and failed **atomic project by Ronald Richter** in the 1940s. The island was inhabited by the **cacique Güenul** and his family, with his tomb located in the first meters of the trail.
Austrian scientist Ronald Richter persuaded Perón to carry out a project of controlled **thermonuclear reactions** on the island. Although the project was interrupted and discredited, it laid the foundation for nuclear development in Argentina and turned Bariloche into a center of **scientific and technological excellence**.
## Future of the Excursion
The plan is to **fix and condition the island** for free visits with strict municipal control and the presence of a forest ranger. Subsequently, progress will be made towards a new tender to **lease the excursion**.
