One of the youths who kicked the coypu to death in Bahía Blanca will be suspended from the university and taken to an academic trial

The death of a coypu in the middle of a public street in Bahía Blanca caused a deep social shock and brought the issue of mistreatment of wildlife back to the agenda. The incident, recorded in a video that quickly went viral, led to judicial actions and disciplinary measures within the university environment.

The event occurred on Paraguay Street at 500, where two 18-year-old youths were filmed while attacking the animal. The victim was a coypu, a native species of Argentine wetlands, which had been previously located by Zoonosis personnel to be rescued.

Following the dissemination of the images, protection organizations filed complaints that allowed the initiation of an investigation aimed at determining responsibilities and applying the corresponding sanctions.

An unprecedented decision within the university environment

The National Technological University, through the Bahía Blanca Regional Faculty, decided to temporarily suspend one of the students involved and initiate an academic trial to evaluate their conduct.

The measure was adopted after analyzing the impact the case had on the educational community and considering that the recorded actions are incompatible with the principles of respect for life and the social commitment promoted by the institution.

Additionally, the resolution opened a disciplinary process that will be evaluated by a tribunal composed of teachers, graduates, and students. This body will analyze the gathered documentation and issue a recommendation that must later be addressed by the Board of Directors.

How the judicial investigation is progressing

Meanwhile, the criminal case continues to progress in the courts. The two youths face charges related to both animal abuse and the impact on protected wildlife.

Furthermore, during the judicial proceedings, electronic devices were seized to obtain original audiovisual records and accurately reconstruct the sequence of events.

On the other hand, investigators are also trying to determine if there was participation of third parties. Among the hypotheses being analyzed is the possible involvement of a young man who may have later removed the animal’s body.

What penalties apply for animal abuse in Argentina

Argentine legislation provides for sanctions for those who commit acts of cruelty or mistreatment against animals. Law 14.346 establishes prison sentences for those who cause unjustified suffering or cause the death of an animal through violent practices.

However, when the acts involve protected wildlife species, provisions of the Wildlife Conservation Law 22.421 may also apply. These regulations include additional sanctions related to the protection of natural heritage.

In addition to prison sentences, those responsible may face disqualifications, fines, and criminal records. In certain cases, these measures limit the possibility of accessing alternative mechanisms that avoid the conduct of an oral trial.

The ecological importance of protecting wildlife

The coypu or nutria plays a fundamental role within aquatic ecosystems. Its presence contributes to the balance of wetlands, lagoons, and watercourses where it participates in key ecological processes.

Therefore, attacks against wild specimens not only affect an individual but also pose a threat to the conservation of biodiversity and the functioning of natural environments.

Consequently, specialists and environmental organizations emphasize the need to strengthen environmental education, promote respect for native fauna, and ensure the effective application of laws that protect Argentina’s natural heritage.
