The Southwest of Buenos Aires remains a key pillar in wind energy.

The Southwest of Buenos Aires continues to be a key player in wind energy, hosting 18 out of the 69 wind farms across the country.

In October 2024, these projects injected 330 GWh of electricity, equivalent to 23.1% of the total renewable energy nationwide. Although this figure is significant, it represents a setback of 8.7% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Despite the slowdown, a report from the Regional Center for Economic Studies of Bahía Blanca, Argentina highlights that the province of Buenos Aires remains essential in wind energy on the national scene.

It is crucial to resume investment growth to consolidate the transformation of the energy matrix and achieve the goals of Law 27.191, the National Promotion Regime for the use of Renewable Energy Sources for the Production of Electric Energy.

Investments and new Wind projects

As of October 2024, Buenos Aires had 26 wind farms, surpassed only by the Patagonian region with 28 projects. With 18 ventures in our area, the region contributes one out of every four parks in the country and injects 23.1% of the total renewable energy.

The current figures are higher than those of October 2021 and 2022 (+5.2% and +8.6%, respectively), although below October 2023, when the injected energy reached 362 GWh (-8.7% year-on-year).

As of October 2024, the energy from the Southwest of Buenos Aires represented 58.4% of the provincial total and 23.1% at the national level. After strong growth towards 2023, there is now a relative stagnation.

National Perspectives and Projections

According to CAMMESA, renewable sources accounted for 15.5% of the electricity generated nationwide between January and October 2024. In September, it stood out with 20.5% of the total GWh in the system. By the end of October, 15.7% of the demanded electricity was covered by renewable sources.

Although Law 27.191 sets a 20% target for 2025, there is still a long way to go. In some specific months, this figure was reached and surpassed, such as in September (21.1%) and October (19.5%).

Projects related to the RenovAr Plan accounted for 57.3% of the total GWh injected into the grid, while 31.7% is linked to the Renewable Energies Term Market (MATER). Wind energy, although showing a slight downward trend, remains responsible for 71.5% of the total renewable energy, followed by solar energy with 16.4%.

Conclusion: Challenges and Opportunities

After a period of strong growth in renewable energies (2019-2022), there is now a slowdown in investments. Although renewables continue to grow, they do not do so at the same pace. Wind energy maintains its dominance (71.5%), followed by solar (16.4%). Nationally and regionally, the contribution of renewable energies has stabilized.

In the first ten months of 2024, renewable energy supplied 15.7% of the national electricity demand, reaching peaks of 21.1% at specific moments.
