The natural reserve Piedra del Agua, an extensive high-altitude grassland located 10 kilometers from La Carolina, was officially incorporated into the Provincial System of Protected Natural Areas. With this addition, an additional 647.4 hectares are added to the 446,227.3 hectares already dedicated to biodiversity conservation in the province.
The agreement was signed by the owners of the reserve, Raymond Florian and Lilian Brondtmann, together with the Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development, Federico Javier Cacace, the Deputy Director of Protected Natural Areas, Giuliana Torti, and the ambassador of the Private Reserves Network, Daniela Pardo Méndez.
This incorporation marks the fourth privately protected natural area that joins the system during Governor Claudio Poggi’s administration. On September 24, 2024, Don Félix and Sacha Juan in Villa de Merlo, La Siempre Viva in Chipiscú, and Quebrada del Palmar in San Francisco del Monte de Oro were integrated.

A commitment to conservation and sustainable development
Protected areas not only safeguard biodiversity and ecosystems, but also promote responsible tourism, environmental education, and connection with nature. The provincial government highlights the importance of collaboration between the State, the private sector, and the community to achieve significant progress in environmental preservation.
Provincial Law No. IX-0309-2004, which regulates the system of protected natural areas, reinforces the commitment to conserve those territories that, due to their environmental richness, unique flora and fauna, and scenic value, are essential for the region.
Piedra del Agua: a natural sanctuary
Located in the Dry Chaco ecoregion, Piedra del Agua is an example of how production and conservation can coexist. Its extension covers over 600 hectares of high-altitude grasslands, where holistic management with rotational grazing is implemented, promoting ecosystem regeneration.
Recently, the reserve made international news after a sighting of a flock of condors feeding in the area, a phenomenon recorded by the Andean Condor Conservation Program and the organization Kondor Chile.
Additionally, Piedra del Agua is part of the Wildlife Refuges Network of the Argentine Wildlife Foundation, is a member of the Grasslands Alliance, and participates in the SARA carbon credit program of Ruuts. With this incorporation, the province strengthens its commitment to protecting natural heritage, ensuring the conservation of key ecosystems for future generations.

The importance of water for the environment
Water is vital for the environment because it is an essential element for life, regulates the climate, and is the habitat of many living beings.
Importance of water for life
- It is an essential constituent of living matter.
- It is the source of hydrogen for green plants to produce organic matter.
- It is the source of oxygen released into the atmosphere during photosynthesis.
- It is involved in all vital functions of plants and animals.
The importance of water for the climate
- It is a natural climate regulator.
- Its evaporation and condensation in the form of clouds redistribute heat and moisture in the atmosphere.
- Its high thermal capacity allows it to absorb and retain large amounts of heat.
For biodiversity
- It is the habitat of millions of species.
- It is the source of life for all species inhabiting different ecosystems.
The importance of water for natural balance
- If bodies of water disappear, decrease, or degrade, important species for the life cycle will disappear.
