The campaign motto “Cover, Clean, Dispose, Turn” promotes these essential tasks in homes to prevent the spread of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, zika, and chikungunya.

During this week, the local Ministry of Health aims to reinforce and support residents in carrying out these actions in their homes, neighborhoods, community spaces, and institutions.

It is also aimed at workers in provincial administration buildings and public health facilities in the Province of Buenos Aires.

It is worth noting that according to the latest provincial epidemiological bulletin, in the week from February 7 to 15, “the first outbreak” of the 2024/2025 season was detected.

It occurred in the town of Monte Chingolo, Lanús, and corresponds to serotype DEN 1 of the virus. There were 3 autochthonous cases of the disease within the same family group.

How to prevent dengue

It is crucial to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Many containers are used to collect larvae, so they must be removed or water accumulation prevented.

To prevent dengue mosquito bites, it is advised to use insect repellent, light-colored clothing covering arms and legs, or protect baby strollers with mosquito nets.

Additionally, it is necessary to drain water from tree holes, rocks, walls, tires, and abandoned latrines, fill in gaps in fences or walls where water may accumulate, and keep tanks and containers covered.

Due to climate change, the mosquito has started to appear in places where it was not common before.

Precipitation and humidity facilitate more breeding sites.

While temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees are optimal for dengue mosquito reproduction, the adult mosquito population disappears with lower temperatures. However, infected eggs remain viable and when warm temperatures return, larvae with infectious capacity hatch.
